Arlington Meningococcal Vaccination

Protection from Meningitis

Meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis, is a severe and potentially dangerous disease that can infect the brain, spinal cord, and blood. It is highly contagious and needs to be treated quickly to prevent serious medical complications. Thankfully, you can take steps to prevent yourself or your child from every catching meningitis by receiving a meningococcal vaccination.

Urgentology Care provides meningococcal vaccines in the Arlington area. We do require appointments for vaccinations, so call us today at (817) 799-7273 or contact us online to schedule one for your child.

When Should Someone Receive a Meningococcal Vaccination

The meningococcal vaccine is a safe procedure recommended for children ages 11 and up. The original vaccination lasts for 5 years, so patients should return for a booster at 16 years old.

This vaccination is usually not recommended for infants or adults. However, there are certain situations where one may be warranted.

Children under 10 may need a meningococcal vaccination if they:

  • Have been diagnosed with HIV
  • Have a rare medical disorder
  • Have spleen damage
  • Take a medication known as Soliris®
  • Have an increased risk of developing meningococcal disease

Adults over the age of 18 may need a vaccination if they:

  • Have been diagnosed with HIV
  • Have a rare medical disorder
  • Have spleen damage
  • Travel to countries where meningococcal disease is common
  • Never received the vaccination as a child
  • Will be living in close quarters such as a military camp or college dorm
  • Have an increased risk of developing meningococcal disease

Although there are no significant risks to receiving a meningococcal vaccine, there are rare instances where a person might have an allergy to the vaccine. If a patient experiences any allergic reaction symptoms after receiving the vaccine, they should not receive another one. Likewise, women who are pregnant or women children that are already feeling sick should not receive the vaccination.

Keep in mind that some side effects, such as fever, headaches, and soreness are normal and not a cause for concern. These symptoms should clear up within a week.
