COVID-19 (Corona Virus) Testing and Screening

Now introducing employee testing. Both in clinic and onsite testing available. Please call our office at 817-809-8760 for onsite options.

As we navigate through the Covid-19 crisis, our practice is committed to bringing the most up to date resources to our community, including the most advanced FDA approved testing available. We continuously monitor the latest updates from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

We recognize that most people may not feel comfortable visiting an urgent care during this COVID-19 pandemic but we want to assure you that we have taken numerous steps to ensure the safety of our staff and patients.

These include the following:

  1. To minimize contact between you and others in the waiting area, we ask that you park your car upon arrival to the clinic and call the clinic phone number at 817-809-8760 to let the receptionist know you are here. This minimal contact allows us to lower any chance of community transmission of COVID-19.
  2. We take extra care to clean and prepare our urgent care center and rooms before our patients arrive.
  3. Every room and furniture is sanitized before patients are allowed in the room.
  4. Everyone must wear a mask inside the clinic.
  5. Employees are trained on safety and continuously reminded to maintain self hygiene. We enforce the wearing of masks and other PPE for our staff.
  6. Covid-19 testing may be performed in the comfort of your car or inside the clinic in designated rooms. These rooms are constantly cleaned and sanitized between patients. Instructions will be provided upon arrival to the clinic.

Brief Overview

PCR test detects viral genetic material (RNA). It is considered very accurate, but takes more time. If you have symptoms, and other tests are not showing it, then you may need to consider a PCR test.

Antigen test detects viral protein in an actively infected person. The manufacturer published data that states that the test is 98.6% specific (Meaning if it is positive it is 98.6% accurate), and that it is >94.7% sensitive (Meaning: if it is negative, it is >94.7% accurate).

Antibody tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which can show if you had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies, which are disease specific, are proteins that help fight off infections and usually provide protection against getting that disease again (immunity). Antibody tests should not be used to diagnose active COVID-19 infection.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is Coronavirus (Covid-19)?

Coronaviruses are a group of common viruses that normally cause mild cold symptoms including cough and fevers. They were first discovered in the 1960’s and named after their crown like shape when viewed on electron microscopy.

COVID-19 (also known as the Novel Coronavirus) is a new type of coronavirus first discovered in Wuhan, China in November 2019. Unlike previous coronaviruses, COVID-19 can cause much more severe symptoms and has an estimated overall mortality rate of about 2-3%, with high risk populations having higher mortality rates. Patients at highest risk are the elderly, and patients with other major or chronic health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease, etc.

Does Urgentology Care perform Covid-19 testing?

Yes, and we now have made testing widely available. See below for a list of Covid-19 tests available at Urgentology Care and brief overview about each test.

Antigen Test (Rapid Test)

The test detects viral protein in an actively infected person. The manufacturer published data that states that the test is 98.6% specific (Meaning: if it is positive it is 98.6% accurate), and that it is >94.7% sensitive (meaning: if it is negative, it is >94.7% accurate).

Antibody Test

Antibody tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which can show if you had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections and usually provide protection against getting that disease again (immunity). Antibodies are disease specific. For example, measles antibody will protect a person who is exposed again to measles but will have no effect if the person is exposed to mumps. Depending on when someone was infected and the timing of the test, the test may not find antibodies in someone with a current COVID-19 infection. Antibody tests should not be used to diagnose active COVID-19 infection.
